Payments
Once you start your CPP retirement pension, you'll receive monthly payments for the rest of your life. View payment dates for direct deposit.
Direct deposit: Your payment will be directly deposited to your bank account every month if you chose direct deposit. You can sign up for direct deposit at any time.
Cheque: If you didn't choose direct deposit, a cheque will be mailed to you during the last 3 business days of each month.
Cost of living increases
Your monthly payment will increase every January if the cost of living goes up. This increase is based on the Consumer Price Index. If your cost of living goes down, your payments will not decrease.
Taxes
Your CPP retirement pension counts as income and is taxable.
How to deduct federal income tax from your CPP payments
Taxes aren't automatically deducted. To have federal income tax deducted from your monthly payments, you can:
- Sign in to your My Service Canada Account
- Select “Change my tax deductions” link from the Canada Pension Plan section
- Complete the Request for voluntary Federal Income tax Deductions CPP/OAS (ISP3520CPP) form and mail it to us or drop it off at a Service Canada office
- Call Service Canada
If you do not ask for monthly tax deductions, you may have to pay your income tax each quarter. For more information, contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Tax Services Office.
If you live outside of Canada
We will automatically deduct the non-resident tax from your payments at a rate of 25% or less, depending on whether Canada has a International Social Security Agreement with the country you live in. You can ask the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for a lower amount to be deducted using the NR5 Application by a Non-Resident of Canada for a Reduction in the Amount of Non-Resident Tax Required to be Withheld for Tax Year form.
How to get copies of your tax slips
Early each year, you will receive a T4 or NR4 tax slip showing the amount you received during the previous year. You must include this slip when you file your annual income tax return by mail or in person.
- T4 tax information slips are for residents of Canada
- NR4 tax information slips are for those living outside Canada
