Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)

Changes to the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant

Note: The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant will end on March 31, 2025. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

The Government of Canada will continue to support apprentices financially as they are unemployed and progress through their technical training. Apprentices can access Employment Insurance benefits and up to $20,000 in interest-free Canada Apprentice Loans. Apprentices can apply for a CAL as early as 3 months before the start of their technical training and can receive funding as early as day one of their training while they wait for their Employment Insurance claim to be processed for payment.

Project funding for organizations providing apprenticeship support to individuals is available under the Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy.

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or level, for a lifetime maximum amount of $2,000 per person.

To be eligible for the AIG, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person
  • not be a high school student
  • have the required AIG supporting documents
  • register with your provincial/territorial apprenticeship authority as an apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade, and
  • provide proof that you have successfully completed either the first year (level/block) or second year (level/block) (or equivalent) in a designated Red Seal trade

If you progressed between January 1, 2021 and March 30, 2024, your deadline to submit an application is: 12 months following your date of progression.

If you progressed on or after March 31, 2024, your deadline to submit an application is: March 31, 2025. You should apply by this date, even if you have not received supporting documents from your apprenticeship authority.

In all cases, the deadline for submitting supporting documents is 12 months from your application deadline date.

Note: The Apprenticeship Completion Grant will end on March 31, 2025. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

The Government of Canada will continue to support apprentices financially as they are unemployed and progress through their technical training. Apprentices can access up to $16,000 in Employment Insurance benefits and up to $20,000 in interest-free Canada Apprentice Loans. Apprentices can apply for a CAL as early as 3 months before the start of their technical training and can receive funding as early as day one of their training while they wait for their Employment Insurance claim to be processed for payment.

The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a one-time taxable cash grant lifetime amount of $2,000 per person for registered apprentices who complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their journeyperson certification.

To be eligible for the ACG, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person
  • not be a high school student
  • have the required ACG supporting documents
  • show that you have completed an apprenticeship program as a registered apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade, and
  • provide proof of your journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade

If you completed your program between January 1, 2021 and March 30, 2024, your deadline to submit an application is: 12 months following your date of completion.

If you progressed on or after March 31, 2024, your deadline to submit an application is: March 31, 2025. You should apply by this date, even if you have not received supporting documents from your apprenticeship authority.

In all cases, the deadline for submitting supporting documents is 12 months from your application deadline date.

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women

Current status: Closed

Note: The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women (AIG-W) pilot project ended on March 31, 2023. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

Apprentices whose first year (level/block) or second year (level/block) progression date occurs after the AIG-W pilot project ends on March 31, 2023 may be eligible for the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG).
