3. Apply

If you are already familiar with the grant:

Service Canada collects personal information you put in a grant application to decide if you qualify for the grant. By starting this application, you consent to the terms of the privacy notice statement. Please read the privacy notice.

To complete your application you need to do the following:

1. Begin to gather supporting documents

If you do not have your supporting documents, you can ask for them from your provincial or territorial apprenticeship issuing authority.

You do not need to have your supporting documents to apply. You can apply and then submit your supporting documents within 28 calendar days.

Supporting documents by provincial or territory

  • Alberta
    • Copy of the Journeyman Certificate issued by the Government of Alberta, Advanced Education, Apprenticeship and Industry Training, or
    • Copy of the Occupational Certificate issued by the Government of Alberta, Advanced Education, Apprenticeship and Industry Training
  • British Columbia
    • Copy of the Certificate of Apprenticeship issued by the Government of British Columbia, Industry Training Authority, and
    • Copy of the Certificate of Qualification issued by the Government of British Columbia, Industry Training Authority

    Note: For the Gasfitter trades, the BC Technical Safety or BC Safety Authority issues the Certificate of Qualification.

  • Manitoba
    • Copy of the Certificate of Qualification issued by the Government of Manitoba, Apprenticeship Manitoba, Department of Education and Training, and
    • Signed copy of the Confirmation of Apprenticeship Completion Letter issued by the Government of Manitoba, Apprenticeship Manitoba, Department of Education and Training
  • New Brunswick
    • Signed copy of the Completion Letter issued by the Government of New Brunswick, Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
    • Signed copy of the Confirmation of Certificate Issued Letter issued by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Department of Advanced Education and Skills and Labour Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division
  • Northwest Territories
    • Copy of the Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate issued by the Government of Northwest Territories, Department of Education, Culture and Employment, and
    • Copy of the Certificate of Qualification issued by the Government of Northwest Territories, Department of Education, Culture and Employment
  • Nova Scotia
    • Copy of the Certificate of Apprenticeship issued by the Government of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency
  • Nunavut
    • Copy of the Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate issued by the Government of Nunavut, Department of Family Services, and
    • Copy of the Certificate of Qualification issued by the Government of Nunavut, Department of Family Services
  • Ontario
    • Copy of the Certificate of Apprenticeship issued by the Government of Ontario, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), and
    • Copy of the Certificate of Qualification issued by the Government of Ontario, Ontario College of Trades (OCOT)
  • Prince Edward Island
    • Signed copy of the Apprenticeship Completion Letter issued by the Government of Prince Edward Island, Department of Workforce and Advanced Learning
  • Quebec – Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ)
    • Copy of the lettre de l’admissibilité à la Subvention à l’achèvement de la formation de l’apprenti issued by the Government of Québec, CCQ
  • Quebec – Emploi-Québec (E-Q) - Compulsory Certification Trades
    • Copy of the certificat de qualification professionnelle issued by the Government of Québec, E-Q, and
    • Copy of the Confirmation de votre admissibilité (avis 1009A) issued by the Government of Québec, E-Q, or apprentices from École Technologie Gazière must submit a copy of the certificat pour le programme d’accès à la qualification TAG-1, TAG-2, TAG-3N or TAG-3P issued by École Technologie Gazière

    Note: All Gasfitters Class A or B must also submit a copy of their certificat de qualification de Technique d’appareils au gaz TAG-1 or TAG-2 and a copy of their certificat de qualification de Technique d’installation de tuyauterie de gaz (ITG). The certificat de qualification ITG is not required for the certificat de qualification TAG-3N or TAG-3P.

  • Quebec – Emploi-Québec (E-Q) Voluntary Trades
    • Copy of la démarche de qualification professionnelle (avis 1002A) issued by the Government of Québec, E-Q, and
    • Copy of the certificat de qualification professionnelle issued by the Government of Québec, E-Q
  • Saskatchewan
    • Copy of the Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship with a Red Seal Endorsement issued by the Government of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC)
  • Yukon
    • Signed copy of the Confirmation of Apprenticeship Completion Letter issued by the Government of Yukon, Advanced Education

Applicants who are permanent residents or have protected status must also provide the following:

  • Permanent Resident
    • Regular SIN; or
    • Copy of status document (IMM 5444) issued by IRCC or Record of Landing, Confirmation of Permanent Resident and/or Permanent Resident visa.
  • Status Documents:
    • Copy of the Status document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), that has not expired; or
    • Notice of Decision issued by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB); or
    • Verification of Status (VOS) document issued by IRCC Status Document.

Permanent Residents and Protected Persons must provide proof of their status if they apply with a 900 series SIN number.

  • Applicants have to provide the following:
    • Copy of Status document (IMM5292) issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), that has not expired; or
    • Notice of Decision issued by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB); or
    • Verification of Status (VOS) (IMM5716) document issued by IRCC.

2. Gather your personal information

Make sure you have all of the information listed below to complete your application:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Provincial apprentice ID number
  • Banking information for direct deposit

3. Complete the online application

Applying online takes about 30 minutes.

There are no expected delays. Online applications should be processed within 28 calendar days.

Fill out your application

Use a pen to complete your paper application. If you complete it in pencil, it will not be processed.

Submit your application

You can choose one of two options to submit your completed paper application and supporting documents:

We must receive your supporting documents within 28 calendar days from the date we receive your application at the processing centre.

Timelines for approval and payment

It takes 28 calendar days to process your grant payment from the date you are approved for the Apprenticeship Completion Grant.

Service Canada will honour the postmark date on your mailed application.

How long will it take to process your paper application

There are no expected delays. Paper applications should be processed within 28 calendar days.

Estimated processing times only apply to applications that:

  • are complete
  • do not have errors, and
  • include all supporting documents

If you submit an application and all supporting documents are not received within 28 calendar days, your application will not be processed. It will be closed and you must re-apply for the grant.

4. Submit your supporting documents by mail or in person

Once you have completed your online application, you must submit your supporting documents. You can choose one of two options for submitting your supporting documents:

  1. Mail all your supporting documents to an Apprenticeship Grant Processing Centre
  2. Bring them to a Service Canada Centre near you

We must receive your supporting documents within 28 calendar days of the date you submit your application online.

If you miss this deadline, your application will be closed and you will need to re-apply for the grant.

If you re-apply and submit your documents, we will honour day the first application was submitted.
