Gather your information
The CBR is a web-based application that can be accessed with a personal computer or smartphone. All information in the CBR is private and will only be disclosed to search and rescue authorities.
Information required to access your account
For registrants that used an email address to sign in prior to December 3, 2025
If you were previously using an email address to sign in, you will need to change your password as the website authenticator has changed. Upon initial sign in, please follow the prompts to gain access to your previously registered beacons.
For registrants that used anything other than an email address to sign in prior to December 3, 2025
Access to the CBR has changed and an email address is now required. Upon initial sign in, please provide your email and new password. You will be prompted to enter your legacy username and password to retrieve your previously registered beacons.

Information required to register or transfer ownership of a beacon
Beacons that are programmed with Canada’s country code are the only beacons that can be registered in the CBR.
Register a new beacon
- Hexcode, or unique identifier number (UIN): Found on the beacon label, this is a 15- or 23-character alphanumeric code starting with A78, or 278, or A79, or 279.
- Checksum (optional): If available for your beacon, this is a 5-character alphanumeric code typically located in the registration info from the beacon manufacturer.
- Beacon manufacturer, model, and serial number.
- Aircraft details for each registered Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT).
- Vessel details for each registered Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).
- Intended usage (hiking, boating, etc.) for each registered Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).
- Emergency contacts that can be reached 24 hours a day.
Transfer a used beacon
New owner
Contact the CBR office and provide details on the beacon to be transferred.
Previous owner
Contact the CBR office and provide the following information:
- Beacon hexcode/UIN
- Details of any craft that was sold with the beacon
- Name of the new owner and, if possible, their contact information.
- Broker contact details (if applicable)
Transfer beacon registration between countries
Many countries have their own beacon registry system and unique encoding protocols. A beacon from another country will need to be reprogrammed by an authorized retailer before it can be registered in the CBR. Contact the beacon manufacturer to find a local retailer.
If a beacon with a Canadian hexcode/UIN is sold to a new owner in another country, the new beacon owner is advised to have the beacon reprogrammed with the new country code and encoding protocols of the new country as soon as possible. This will prevent delays in response during a beacon emergency. Once the beacon is reprogrammed with the new country code and registered in that country’s beacon registry, then the new owner is responsible for contacting the CBR to have the beacon removed from their profile.
