Message from Minister Qualtrough

The Honourable Carla Qualtrough

Welcome to the 2017 North American Indigenous Games!

The North American Indigenous Games are a true celebration of sport and culture. They provide an opportunity for Indigenous youth to showcase their athletic abilities, and to celebrate their heritage through a number of cultural events.

The Government is proud to support these Games. We are responding to the calls for action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, which recognizes the Games as an important vehicle to promote Indigenous sport development and recreation in Canada.

The land on which we come together this week is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, the Métis, and most recently, the territory of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. Today, the meeting place of Toronto, from the Haudenosaunee word Tkaronto, is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful that these Games are being held in this territory.

As Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, I want to thank the many organizers and volunteers who have made this year’s Games possible, and wish all of the athletes good luck!

The Honourable Carla Qualtrough
