About the North American Indigenous Games movement

Traditional Indigenous dancing and performance.

The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) showcase and support the development of Indigenous athletic talent, put a spotlight on the host regions, and present an opportunity to nurture Indigenous and Canadian pride.

Every NAIG also has a cultural program to celebrate the distinct cultural heritage of Indigenous communities through art, music, cuisine and traditional artisans.

The first official NAIG were held in 1990 in Edmonton, Alberta. Since then, there have been 7 more Games that have left profound memories in the hearts of athletes and lasting legacies in host communities.

Competing athletes must be born of North American Indigenous ancestry and participating contingents must represent the Indigenous Peoples of a province/territory in Canada, or a state/region in the United States of America.

The international governing body of the Games is the NAIG Council which ensures the purposes and philosophies of the Games are reflected in all aspects of the events.
