Government of Canada investments in the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG)

Toronto 2017 NAIG

The Government of Canada, through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, is providing up to $3.5 million to support the Toronto 2017 NAIG to promote and encourage the health and well-being of Indigenous youth through sport.

Sport Canada is also providing an additional $1 million to support travel costs for provincial and territorial teams to help remove the barrier of travel costs and to facilitate participation.

Before Toronto 2017 NAIG

The Government of Canada (Sport Canada) has supported the NAIG in a variety of ways for many years. For example, for the last two editions of the NAIG in Canada (Cowichan 2008 and Regina 2014), the Government of Canada contributed a total of $7 million in direct funding to the host organizations and over $1.9 million to support transportation of participating Canadian provincial and territorial teams.

Support for the NAIG movement

This year, Budget 2017 announced long-term commitments to support Indigenous youth and sport and ongoing funding to the NAIG movement. Read Minister Qualtrough's news release and learn about the stable, ongoing funding the Government of Canada has pledged.
