Main objective | The COSPAS-SARSAT Programme supports a satellite-based distress alerting system. Distress alerting is a key part of our national and international air, marine and ground search and rescue systems. The mission of the Programme is to provide accurate, timely and reliable distress alerting and location data to help search and rescue authorities assist persons in distress. The system provides the data at no cost, on a non-discriminatory basis, to search and rescue services worldwide for ships, aircrafts and individuals who have equipped themselves, at their own cost with compatible distress radio beacons. It ensures that all Canadians within, and to an extent those outside of, Canada’s search and rescue zone of responsibility are provided with a real-time response to the emergency beacon transmissions. The main objective of this transfer program is to meet Canada's obligation, under the International COSPAS-SARSAT Programme Agreement (ICSPA), to share the operating costs of the COSPAS-SARSAT Secretariat when performing administrative task and functions in support of the Parties to the agreement and the other participants of the COSPAS-SARSAT Programme. |
