  1. This CANCDTGEN is an interim policy update which supersedes paragraph 14 of reference A and is effective 1 September 2023. Following a review of common cadet training, specifically drill, it was determined that the use of the bayonet, fixed or unfixed, or swords by cadets is no longer appropriate. Therefore, training with and the use of the bayonets or swords is no longer authorized.
  2. All publications reflecting the use of bayonets including Chapter 2, Section 216 – Fixing Bayonets and Section 217 – Unfixing Bayonets of reference B, as well as Chapter 6, Section 1 – Sword Drill of reference C, will no longer be taught as part of the Cadet Program.
  3. All bayonets or swords held against the corps/squadron Distribution Account (DA) are to be returned to the respective Regional Cadet Support Unit (RCSU) no later than 30 September 2023. Further direction will be issued by Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers Group Headquarters (CJCR Gp HQ) regarding appropriate disposal methods.
  4. In accordance with reference C, the sword is one of the traditional badges of rank for those who hold His Majesty’s commission or warrant. In the Cadet Program, with the intent of cadets leading cadets, there are no occasions for a sword to be carried during a cadet activity, such as on parade. If a special requirement is identified, authorization to wear or carry a sword will be obtained from the RCSU Commanding Officer through the corps/squadrons chain of command.
  5. Questions regarding the return of bayonets or swords may be directed to the respective RCSU J4 sections.
