The Defence Team, which comprises the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), is the largest federal government organization by workforce
Members of the CAF serve on the sea, on land, and in the air, with the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command. The CAF has Regular Force members and Reservists, with four sub-components in the Reserve Force: Primary Reserve, Canadian Rangers, Cadet Organizations Administration and Training Service, and Supplementary Reserve. “CAF members” refers to members of the Regular Force and the Primary Reserve, unless otherwise noted. Note that demographic statistics represent the number of people, not the number of full-time positions.
DND public service employees work to support the CAF in its role of defending Canada and Canadians at home and abroad. This section describes the demographic composition of the Defence Team and includes information about: Defence Advisory Groups (DAGs), sentiment towards diversity, equity, and inclusion, employment equity groups (women, Indigenous people, and members of racialized groups), accessibility, and official languages.
