Canada Labour Code Prosecution: Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) – Moncton
On June 4, 2014, three RCMP constables were shot and killed by a heavily armed individual in Moncton, New Brunswick. Two constables were wounded. The Labour Program of Employment and Social Development Canada laid four charges against the RCMP on May 15, 2015. On September 29, 2017, the judge rendered a guilty verdict to one charge. A not guilty verdict was rendered for two other charges and one charge was stayed. On January 26, 2018, the judge set the fine at $100,000, and also required the RCMP to make $450,000 in donations, for a total sentence of $550,000. The RCMP were instructed to make donations to specific local and national organizations in honour of the deceased, in support of their children, and in support of all families of victims of workplace injuries or death.
