Share your ideas: Helping Canada achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Canada and abroad

Current status: Closed

This consultation ran from December 8, 2023 to February 29, 2024.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to solicit input from stakeholders and partners across society who are undertaking work to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Canada and abroad. Your input is being sought in the context of preparing for Canada’s 2024 Annual Report on the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, led by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

ESDC wants to learn about your contribution(s) to implement and achieve the SDGs in Canada and abroad.

What is the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at a historic United Nations (UN) Summit. The 2030 Agenda is a 15-year global framework centred on the 17 SDGs, which are separate but interconnected goals, collectively calling for action by all states. The 2030 Agenda envisions a world free of poverty and hunger, with full and productive employment, access to quality education and universal health coverage, the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls and an end to environmental degradation. It is universal in nature and includes an overarching principle of ensuring that no one is left behind in efforts to achieve the SDGs.

Canada’s Annual Report on the SDGs

Moving Forward Together – Canada’s 2030 Agenda National Strategy commits to report annually to Canadians on progress made to advance the SDGs. Canada’s first annual report, Taking Action Together – Canada’s 2021 Annual Report on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, was released in July 2022. It recognizes the inspiring work being undertaken by all levels of governments and whole-of-society stakeholders and partners, including Indigenous Peoples, civil society, the private sector, youth, the academic community and the non-profit and volunteer communities to achieve the SDGs.

In July 2023, Canada conducted its second Voluntary National Review – A Continued Journey for Implementing the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. The report provides a comprehensive whole-of-society review of Canada’s progress to achieve the SDGs, and includes successes, challenges and lessons learned, with a view to accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. In the years that Canada conducts a Voluntary National Review (VNR), it will replace the annual report in that year. As such, Canada's next annual report on the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs will be released in summer 2024.

The integrated nature of the SDGs demands collaboration and cooperation across whole-of-society stakeholders and partners. Advancing the SDGs is a shared responsibility and, as such, ESDC is once again seeking diverse contributions demonstrating whole-of-society efforts to achieve the SDGs for its 2024 Annual Report. Everyone is invited to provide content, including individuals, all levels of governments, civil society organizations, Indigenous communities, academia, and non-profit and charitable organizations. We look forward to hearing about the work you are undertaking to achieve the SDGs!
