About the Canada Disability Benefit program

The government has now completed the regulatory process for the Canada Disability Benefit, a new monthly benefit for low-income working-age persons with disabilities. The finalized regulations and the related Regulatory Impact Analysis Statement were published in Part II of the Canada Gazette on March 12, 2025.

Background

On June 22, 2024, the Canada Disability Benefit Act came into force. This Act was created to support the financial security of persons with disabilities by establishing the Canada Disability Benefit, and provided authority for the government to make regulations to set out the details of the new benefit.

In June 2024, proposed regulations outlining the parameters for the new benefit, such as eligibility criteria, the amount of the benefit and how it would be calculated, were published in Part I of the Canada Gazette for an 86-day public comment period. Following the end of the consultation period on September 23, 2024, the government worked to finalize the regulations based on comments received so that the new benefit can be paid to Canadians.

The final Canada Disability Benefit Regulations came into force (took legal effect) on May 15, 2025.

The Canada Disability Benefit is a key commitment and cornerstone of Canada's Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), which is a blueprint for change to make Canada more inclusive for persons with disabilities.
