Risk management action milestones for Batch 3 chemical substances

The chemical substances listed below are from Batch 3 of the Challenge, and each substance has met the criteria of section 64 (c) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999). The tables below compile the proposed risk management actions for both health and the environment and provide the current status and any updated information for these proposed actions. CEPA 1999 SNAc provision. SNAc Order published in the Canada Gazette, Part II on October 10, 2012.

Following publication of the Code of Practice for DEGME, a notice of intent to amend the SNAc provisions for DEGME was published on November 25, 2017.
Food and Drugs Act (cosmetics) Addition to the Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist. The Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist has been amended.
CEPA 1999 Investigate whether risk management of paint, paint remover, sealant / caulking, floor cleaner, floor sealer and floor polish needs to be put into place. Investigations by Health Canada identified the need to reduce exposure of Canadians to DEGME in surface coating materials that are consumer products. To manage this source of exposure, a Code of Practice for a Recommended Concentration of 2-(2-methoxyethoxy) Ethanol (DEGME) in Surface Coating Materials Available to Consumers in Canada was published in the Canada Gazette, Part I: Vol. 150, No. 45 - November 5, 2016 (PDF Version - 1,550 K).
Food and Drugs Act (food) Request data on residual levels of DEGME for new food packaging submissions with direct food contact. In effect as of March 2009.

Common Name: 2-Methoxy-1-propanol

Food and Drugs Act (cosmetics) Addition to the Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, prohibiting concentrations greater than 0.5% in cosmetics. The Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist has been amended. 
Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (replaced Part I and Schedule I to the Hazardous Products Act) Investigate whether risk management of paint remover, polyurethane varnish and concrete floor primer needs to be put in place. Investigation complete under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. No action will be taken at this time.
 
Further investigation, including product testing, will take place under other Acts to identify whether risk management needs to be put in place.
Food and Drugs Act (food) Request data on residual levels of 2-methoxypropanol for new food packaging submissions with direct food contact. In effect as of March 2009.
