Summary
The Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) administers and enforces the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and its regulations.
The purpose of this Compliance Verification (CV) project was to verify industry's compliance of cribs with the mechanical and chemical requirements of the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations (Regulations).
For this project, compliance of select cribs with the Regulations was determined through a sampling and testing process by which Health Canada inspectors visited establishments and sampled relevant products. Compliance with the requirements listed under the Regulations was then verified through testing at the Product Safety Laboratory.
Prior to initiating inspections, the CPSP carried out a market survey to determine the presence of crib companies in Canada. Targets were then selected from that list of companies.
Over the course of the 2022-2023 fiscal year, mechanical and chemical testing of 14 different products was carried out. Two additional companies were requested to provide a test report demonstrating product compliance to theRegulations but none were provided, resulting in a stop sale for both products. Of the total products reviewed, 14 out of the 16 samples were imported products. The overall outcome of the CV project resulted in 1 alert, 3 recalls, 2 stop sales, 2 stop distributions and 8 commitments to address non-compliance.
