Consumer Product Enforcement Summary Report - Compliance Verification Project 2023-2024: Surface Coating Materials Regulations

Summary
The Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) administers and enforces the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and its regulations.
The purpose of this Compliance Verification (CV) project was to verify industry's compliance of furniture products with the specific lead requirements of the Surface Coating Materials Regulations.
For this project, compliance of select furniture was determined through an evaluation process where Health Canada inspectors visited establishments in-person only and sampled relevant products. Compliance with the requirements listed under the Regulations was verified through testing at the Product Safety Laboratory.
Prior to initiating inspections, the CPSP carried out a market survey to determine the presence of establishments selling, importing, or manufacturing furniture in Canada. Targets were then selected from that survey.
Over the course of the 2023-2024 fiscal year, chemical testing of 26 different products was carried out, where 19 out of the 26 samples were imported products. No compliance issues were detected following testing and therefore no corrective actions were required.
