Registration Decision Statement^{Footnote 1} for Bacillus velezensis strain RTI301 and Bacillus subtilis strain RTI477

Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act, is granting registration for the sale and use of Bacillus velezensisstrain RTI301Technical, Bacillus subtilisstrain RTI477 Technical, Ataplan Biological Fungicide and Arolist Biological Fungicide, containing the technical grade active ingredients Bacillus velezensis strain RTI301 and Bacillus subtilis strain RTI477 for the suppression of seed rot and seedling blight in corn (field, sweet, pop and corn grown for seed), soybean and sunflower, and for suppression of sudden death syndrome of soybean.

This decision is consistent with the Proposed Registration Decision PRD2021-06, Bacillus velezensis strain RTI301, Bacillus subtilis strain RTI477, Ataplan Biological Fungicide and Arolist Biological Fungicide, which contains a detailed evaluation of the information submitted in support of this registration. The evaluation found that, under the approved conditions of use, the health and environmental risks and the value of the pest control product(s) are acceptable. See Appendix I for a summary of comments received during the consultation process as well as Health Canada's response to these comments.

Appendix I    Comments and responses

Comments

1. A comment was received from a pediatrician, expressing concern at the presence of Bacillus velezensis in food.
2. A comment was received from a member of the public arguing that pesticides are harmful to human health, animals and plants and that allowing the proposed registrations would result in an increase in use and concentration of pesticides.

Response

Before registering a pest control product, Health Canada thoroughly assesses the value of the product as well as the risks to human health and the environment. Only products with demonstrated value as well as acceptable health and environmental risks are registered. The risk assessment (summarized in PRD 2021-06) concludes that the use of Ataplan Biological Fungicide and Arolist Biological Fungicide as a seed treatment on corn (field, sweet, pop and corn grown for seed), soybean and sunflower is acceptable when the product is used according to the label directives.
