This List of Medical Devices for an Urgent Public Health Need (UPHN list) is incorporated by reference in Part 1.1 of the Medical Devices Regulations (MDR).
Health Canada maintains and updates this list as required.
In the UPHN list:
- a medical condition is added to column 1 of Part 1 or Part 2 (subsection 68.1(1) of the MDR) when the Minister has reasonable grounds to believe:
- the condition presents, or is the result of, a significant risk to public health in Canada
- immediate action is required to deal with the risk
- a medical device is added to column 2 of Part 1 (subsection 68.1(2) of the MDR) when the Minister has reasonable grounds to believe:
- there is an urgent public health need for the devices for the corresponding medical condition set out in column 1
- a category of medical devices is added to column 2 of Part 2 (subsection 68.1(3) when the Minister has reasonable grounds to believe:
- there is an urgent public health need for the devices that belong to those categories for the corresponding medical condition set out in column 1
