Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Sweeteners to Enable the Use of the Sweetener Erythritol to Non-Alcoholic Beverages Other than Cola Type Beverages - Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0067

Background

Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a detailed safety assessment of a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of erythritol as a sweetener in non-alcoholic carbonated water-based fruit-flavoured sweetened beverages other than cola type beverages.

Erythritol is already permitted for use in Canada as a table-top sweetener and as a sweetener in a number of other foods including dietetic beverages, fruit-based smoothie beverages, unstandardized dairy-based beverages, and unstandardized alcoholic beverages.

As no safety concerns were raised through Health Canada’s assessment the Department has enabled the food additive use of erythritol as a sweetener in non-alcoholic carbonated water-based fruit-flavoured sweetened beverages other than cola type beverages, as described in the information document below by updating the List of Permitted Sweeteners, effective February 25, 2016. The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
