Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Preservatives to Enable the Use of Long-Chain Glycolipids from Dacryopinax spathularia MUCL 53181 in Various Non-Alcoholic Beverages - Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0184 [2022-06-10]

Background

Health Canada’s Food Directorate completed a premarket safety assessment of a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of long-chain glycolipids from Dacryopinax spathularia MUCL 53181 as a preservative in various standardized and unstandardized non-alcoholic beverages.

Health Canada published a Proposal to Enable the Use of Long-Chain Glycolipids from Dacryopinax spathularia MUCL 53181 as a Preservative in Various Non-Alcoholic Beverages [NOP/ADP-0037] on September 23, 2021. The proposal was open to the public for comment for 75 days. No comments were received during this period.

The results of the premarket assessment support the safety of long-chain glycolipids from D. spathularia MUCL 53181 for its requested uses. Consequently, Health Canada has enabled the use of long-chain glycolipids from D. spathularia MUCL 53181 described in the information document below by modifying Part 2 and Part 3 of the List of Permitted Preservatives, effective June 10, 2022.

The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for those wishing to submit an inquiry or new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
