Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Sweeteners to Enable the Use of Steviol Glycosides from Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y63348 in a Variety of Foods

Reference Number : NOM/ADM-0151

Background

Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a premarket safety assessment of a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of steviol glycosides from Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y63348 as a sweetener in the same foods where steviol glycosides from other sources is already permitted and at the same maximum levels as are allowed for those foods.

The already-permitted steviol glycosides is from the plant Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni or the yeasts S. cerevisiae CD15380 or S. cerevisiae CD15407.

The results of the premarket assessment support the safety of steviol glycosides from S. cerevisiae Y63348 for the same uses as are already permitted for steviol glycosides from these other sources. Consequently, Health Canada has enabled the use of steviol glycosides from S. cerevisiae Y63348 described in the information document below by modifying the List of Permitted Sweeteners, effective September 1, 2020.

The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
