Immigration measures and support for Ukrainians and their families

These measures have been extended. You can continue to benefit from these temporary measures until December 31, 2024.
The deadline for many of the temporary residence immigration measures for Ukrainians and their family members was March 31, 2024. This was the last day to
- enter Canada to benefit from the CUAET measures
- apply for temporary residence in Canada under special immigration measures for Ukrainians and their family members
However, depending on your situation, some temporary measures may still be available.

You haven’t arrived in Canada yet
If your application under the CUAET measures was approved on or after February 4, 2024, you can travel to Canada using your approved temporary resident visa and be authorized to enter Canada under the CUAET measures.
If you were also approved for an open work permit, you will get one when you arrive in Canada.
CUAET approval letter
We’ll send you a CUAET approval letter that confirms your application was approved under the CUAET measures.
Bring this letter with you to Canada and show it to the Government of Canada officer at the Canadian port of entry.
This letter confirms to the officer that you’re eligible to benefit from many of the CUAET measures, including
- an extended temporary stay of up to 3 years in Canada
- access to fee-exempt study permits and open work permits
To apply for a permit, you can either
- tell the officer at the port of entry or
- apply from within Canada

You haven’t gotten a decision on your CUAET application yet
If you applied under the CUAET measures on or before July 15, 2023, and you haven’t gotten a decision yet (an approval or a rejection), it may be due to the complexity of the application.
We’re still working on processing it as soon as possible.
If your application is approved
We’ll send you a CUAET approval letter that confirms that your application was approved under the CUAET measures.
Bring this letter with you to Canada and show it to the Government of Canada officer at the Canadian port of entry.
Once your application is approved, find more information for your situation under “Your CUAET application was approved on or after February 4, 2024.”

A new measure has been put in place to allow you to apply for the following from inside Canada:
- a new open work permit
- an extension of your current open work permit
- a new study permit
Under normal circumstances, applicants can’t apply for these from inside Canada.

You can continue to stay in Canada until the expiry date on your temporary resident document.
If you want to apply to extend your stay, work permit or study permit, you must apply through the regular process and you’ll have to pay standard processing fees.

You haven’t arrived in Canada yet
You can still travel to Canada using your approved temporary resident visa (TRV) until it expires.
If you were also approved for an open work permit, you will get one when you arrive in Canada, as long as it has not expired.
However, because the deadline to enter Canada to benefit from the CUAET measures was March 31, 2024, you
- need to meet the general requirements to enter Canada
- are no longer eligible for in-Canada supports and exemptions under the CUAET measures
You’re in Canada as a temporary resident but not under the CUAET measures
You can continue to stay in Canada until the expiry date on your temporary resident document.
If you want to apply to extend your stay, work permit or study permit, you must apply through the regular process and you’ll have to pay standard processing fees.

- in Canada, and
- the family member of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
