Immigration measures and support for Ukrainians and their families
New: As of April 1, 2026, special measures for Ukrainians and their eligible family members have changed.
Although the Canada–Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) ended on July 15, 2023, immigration measures are in place for people in Canada who
- have a valid open work permit that was issued under a public policy for Ukrainians and eligible family members, or
- are waiting for a decision on their application for the permanent residence pathway for Ukrainians and family members
You may experience delays renewing your Ukrainian passport in Canada
Due to a backlog of applications at the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, you may experience delays renewing your Ukrainian passport. If you want to extend your temporary resident status in Canada but you can’t renew your passport in time, you can still submit an application. We’ll assess these applications on a case-by-case basis.
If you get your new passport while we’re processing your application to extend your status, send us a copy of it using our web form.
You’re in Canada with a valid open work permit that was issued under a public policy for Ukrainians and eligible family members
You may be eligible to extend your open work permit for up to 3 years.
Deadline to apply: March 31, 2027
Visitors, study permit holders and temporary resident permit holders
If you hold a visitor record, study permit or a temporary resident permit, you can apply to extend your temporary resident status in Canada through the regular process.
- Extend your stay as a visitor
- Extend your study permit
- Extend your stay as a temporary resident permit holder
Missing the CUAET remark?
If you’re in Canada under the CUAET measures but your temporary resident document (IMM 1442) is missing the “CUAET” remark, you can request a new one with the remark.
You’re waiting for a decision on your application for the permanent residence pathway for Ukrainians and family members
This means you
- submitted or were included in an application for the pathway before it closed on October 22, 2024
- are waiting for a decision on your application for permanent residence
If you submitted an application for the permanent residence pathway for Ukrainian nationals with family members in Canada before it closed on October 22, 2024, we’ll continue processing it.
