How long you can stay in Canada

The date you apply for your super visa and, in certain situations, the date you enter Canada, may affect how long you can stay.

Before your status in Canada expires, you need to do one of the following:

It is your responsibility to maintain valid visitor status.

If you applied on or after June 22, 2023

You’re eligible to stay for 5 years at a time.

If you applied before June 22, 2023

The date you enter Canada with a valid super visa may also affect how long you can stay.

You entered Canada before June 22, 2023

You can only stay in Canada for the length of time the border officer granted you when you entered Canada.

For example, if you were granted 2 years, you can stay in Canada for 2 years.

However, if you want a longer stay, you have 2 options. You can either

  • leave Canada before the end of your authorized stay and re-enter Canada, or
  • apply to extend your stay in Canada and be approved for an extension of up to 2 years

The border officer may let you stay for 5 years if you still meet all the eligibility requirements for a super visa.

You entered Canada on or after June 22, 2023

You’re eligible to stay for 5 years at a time. If a border officer grants you entry to Canada, you can stay for 5 years, even if the border officer doesn’t stamp your passport.
