Extend a worker’s permit

Workers in Quebec

If you’re a Quebec employer, you may not need a new labour market impact assessment (LMIA) to extend your worker’s permit.

This means that you need to submit only an offer of employment to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

If the worker can extend their work permit, they can continue to work for you for up to 12 months.

Follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your job offer is eligible

The job offer is eligible if the work is in Quebec. It doesn’t matter if you previously hired the worker with or without an LMIA.

  2. Make sure your worker is eligible

There are certain requirements that your worker must meet, such as the following:

    • The worker applied for a demande de sélection permanente, which means that
    • The worker is already working for you.
    • The worker’s employer-specific work permit is in 1 of these situations:
      • It will expire on or before December 31, 2026.
      • It expired, but the worker
        • already applied to extend it before the expiry date
        • maintains their status
      • It expired between March 13, 2026 and December 31, 2026, but the worker is out of status (because they didn’t extend their permit).

The worker doesn’t have to work the same job as the one they worked under the expiring permit.

  3. Submit the offer of employment

If your worker and the job offer are eligible, you must do the following:

    1. Submit an offer of employment to us in the Employer Portal and follow these steps:
      • Don’t pay the employer compliance fee ($230).
        • Select “No, I am exempt from paying fees for this Offer of Employment” in the Employer Portal.
        • Upload a letter explaining that you don’t have to pay the fee under this exemption for Quebec employers.
      • Use LMIA exemption code R01 when you fill out the online form.
      • Type the code PPTR2PRQC2026 in the Job Title field (for priority processing).
    2. Give the worker the offer of employment number. The number
      • starts with the letter “A” followed by 7 digits
      • is given to you after you submit the offer of employment in the Employer Portal

After you complete these steps, the worker
