OAKVILLE, ONTARIO - Terence Young, Member of Parliament for Oakville, on behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence, today announced an investment of $483,000 in funding to improve infrastructure at the Oakville Armoury, in support of the Canadian Armed Forces.
The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today announced the completion of rehabilitation work at the île aux Perroquets lighthouse station. It is an investment of about $3 million by the Government of Canada on a project totalling nearly $4.5 million.
The first île aux Perroquets lighthouse station was erected in 1888, more than 125 years ago. Several lightkeepers have succeeded each other, including Count Henry de Puyjalon, Placide Vigneau, Robert Kavanagh and John Collin. The current lighthouse, built in 1951, was designated as a heritage lighthouse in April 2014 for its historic, architectural and community value. The designation includes the site's seven related buildings, including the former lightkeeper and assistant's houses and the foghorn building.
