Ombudsman launches systemic investigation with a focus on mental health

Ombudsman Message | 20 May 2022

I am pleased to announce the launch of a systemic investigation on the mental health issues faced by our Defence team.

During the past decade, Defence team members have served in unexpected ways in both domestic and international operations. At the same time, they have faced unprecedented challenges in areas such as sexual misconduct, personnel shortages, and the global pandemic. These challenges have had impacts on some personnel’s health, notably their mental health.

This critical issue deserves careful scrutiny. In the coming months, we will conduct our investigation, using interviews, focus groups, armchair discussions and other means. More information will follow on how to participate.

Following our investigation, we will provide the Minister and other decision makers with evidence-based recommendations to ensure long lasting improvements for the Defence community.

I encourage all members of our Defence community to consult our website regularly for updates. If you feel you have been unfairly treated or need help, please reach out. You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for more information.
