Final salute: Reflections and farewell from your Ombudsman

Ombudsman Message | 25 June 2024

Members of the Defence community,

My time as your Ombudsman is ending on 1 July.

I am proud of the work my office has done in the past six years to improve the Defence community. Whether through individual assistance and recommendations, systemic investigations, speaking on important issues, or creating and sharing educational information to help our constituents, our efforts have been felt by military families, CAF members, and civilians alike.

I was fortunate to be able to travel to various bases and wings across Canada, the U.S., and Europe and, firsthand, witness the experience of our members and families.

The department and CAF have made improvements; however, more needs to be done, especially on the civilian side.  Our performance on complaints where unfairness is founded demonstrates this clearly. We have a 100 per cent success rate with the CAF actioning our individual recommendations to correct unfairness. With civilian complaints, senior leadership needs to learn from the CAF. Recognize and admit error and correct it—simple.

My predecessors and I have made multiple recommendations on how we can continuously improve the Defence community. I have faith that whoever is chosen as my replacement will continue this work and move the yardstick even farther.

Our national security depends on ensuring the fair treatment of our military members and their families. This can only be achieved with the ongoing and improved support from our government, regardless of which party is in power.

Once I retire, I will continue serving the Defence community in a different capacity by volunteering with organizations assisting homeless veterans and transitioning members. In my work as Ombudsman, I have witnessed how transition can be challenging and although I will no longer be a public figure, I will still use my voice to help when, and where I can.

To my team, I admire and commend you for the daily dedication you have shown our constituents. You are a passionate group of individuals who consistently ensure that members of the Defence community are treated fairly, and with respect. I know you will continue the great work for years to come.

It has been an honour, and my greatest opportunity, to serve you.

Until we meet again.
