Alberta High-Speed Rail

Description

Alberta's population is projected to grow substantially in the coming decades, with the corridor between Calgary and Edmonton expected to account for a large share of that growth. The concept of high-speed rail in this corridor has been studied by the province and other stakeholders at various points since the 1980s.  The current proposal considered as part of Alberta's most recent Passenger Rail Master Plan examines a range of potential passenger rail corridors across the province.

Alberta and Canada are exploring how they can strengthen federal collaboration, align capabilities across departments and agencies, and support coordinated progress on this strategy by assessing market interest and implementation opportunities, including potential market-sounding activities. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to enhancing mobility, increasing economic productivity, strengthening regional connectivity, attracting investment, and supporting Alberta's long-term growth and competitiveness.

The proposed high-speed rail connection between Calgary and Edmonton via Red Deer, linking Alberta's two largest cities is in early and conceptual planning stages.
