Supporting Proponents

The Major Projects Office provides a single window for proponents to advance major projects within the federal assessment and permitting process. Whether you’re at the beginning of the process or already navigating approvals, we can help you move your project forward faster, with greater clarity, and in alignment with Canada’s economic, environmental, and reconciliation goals.

How we can help

Through our office, major project proponents receive:

  • Coordination with funding partners to help structure financing for major projects
  • Coordinated support for their projects across all relevant federal departments and agencies
  • Guidance on assessment, regulatory and permitting requirements and clear pathways towards federal decisions
  • Guidance on establishing partnerships with Indigenous Peoples and engaging meaningfully with Indigenous rights-holders throughout the life of a project
  • Strategic support to identify solutions to barriers for project development
  • Project monitoring and oversight

Work with us

As a proponent of a new or existing major project, reach out if you are:

  • planning or proposing a major nation-building project that will require multiple federal decisions
  • unsure how to navigate the federal assessment, regulatory, permitting, or consultation processes
  • seeking advice on how to engage early and meaningfully with Indigenous Peoples
  • interested in having your project listed as being in the national interest under the Building Canada Act

The Major Projects Office will follow up with you if your project aligns with our mandate and could benefit from our support.

Types of projects

The Major Projects Office helps to advance projects and areas of nation-building focus.

1. Projects for further consideration

These are projects that have been deemed to be of national importance and significance, and have been referred to the Major Projects Office for further assessment and consultations. The Major Projects Office will continue to work with proponents, provinces and territories, and Indigenous Peoples, to find the right way forward for these projects.

2. Transformative Strategies

The Major Projects Office also supports strategic areas of focus and activity that will be transformative for Canada and Canadians. This work is being done in two general streams:

  • Transforming regulatory processes: The Major Projects Office is working towards transforming the regulatory processes to ensure that major projects are reviewed within two years, from start to finish.
  • Transformative projects: The Major Projects Office will work on transformative projects and concepts for Canada, which cover critical mineral development, wind energy, critical infrastructure in the North, ports, and other transportation infrastructure connecting Canadians and our goods with the world, as well as innovative carbon capture and storage and carbon management technologies. While these projects and concepts have boundless potential and meet the criteria of growth, security, diversification of markets and reconciliation, they are at earlier stages and require further development.

The Office will create business development teams to work with provinces and territories, proponents, and Indigenous Peoples to further develop and make these nation-building projects a reality.
