Answers to top questions

When will I know if my declaration has been accepted?

Declarations are currently being assessed. The collection, deactivation and compensation processes are expected to run in different areas of the country from spring through early fall 2026 with the support of the RCMP, participating local police of jurisdiction and private sector secure mobile collection units. When the collection and deactivation processes begin in your area, you will be notified through your web portal account (or by phone and mail if you submitted a paper declaration) if your declaration is accepted or denied.

How was the value of my firearm determined?

Compensation amounts are based on in-depth research and consultation. Learn more about the program’s compensation model.

I’m a Canadian Armed Forces member deployed outside the country. Can I still declare my prohibited firearm to seek compensation?

Yes. We’ll accommodate members of the Canadian Armed Forces or law enforcement agencies currently deployed outside Canada who may have difficulties declaring their prohibited firearms due to their deployment. Call the contact centre as soon as you can for more information.

I had an issue completing my declaration and called the contact centre for assistance. If my issue has not yet been resolved, can I still submit my declaration?

Yes, providing you had opened your case with the contact centre before the declaration period ended. You will be contacted by the contact centre with further instructions.
