Start your declaration

The nation-wide declaration period will open from January 19, 2026 to March 31, 2026. You must submit your declaration to the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) within this timeframe to be considered eligible for the collection process and compensation.

Please note that submitting a declaration does not guarantee you will receive compensation. Declarations will be reviewed after the declaration period ends, primarily on a first come, first served basis and accepted based on availability of program funds. You are encouraged to submit your declaration as early as possible to increase the likelihood of receiving compensation.

While participating in the program is voluntary, compliance with the law is not. Individual firearm owners must safely dispose of or permanently deactivate their assault-style firearms before the amnesty period ends on October 30, 2026, or risk criminal liability for the illegal possession of a prohibited firearm.

If you wish to receive a paper-based declaration to apply by mail, or if you would like to receive information in Indigenous languages (Mohawk, Anishinaabe (Ojibwe), Inuktut (South Baffin), Cree, Algonquin, Dene, or Mi’kmaq), please contact the program contact centre. Paper-based declarations must be post-marked no later than March 24, 2026 to align with program deadlines.

Completing your declaration

      • firearm reference number (FRN)
      • make
      • model
      • serial number

These will be automatically added in your declaration based on Canadian Firearms Program records, but you should verify the information for accuracy.

  3. Submit your declaration

After your declaration has been submitted

When the declaration period closes in March 2026, all declarations will be reviewed to determine which will move to the claim submission stage. You will receive a message through the message centre in your online portal account whether your declaration has been accepted or denied.

If your declaration is accepted, you may then log into your account and complete the following:

  • Provide your payment information
  • Confirm you agree to the funding agreement
  • Schedule a collection appointment

The declaration period will open on Monday, January 19, 2026.
