LHHR: Indigenous Student Employment Opportunity (18-04)

February 23, 2018

Colleagues,

As part of the Government of Canada’s ongoing commitment to recruiting Indigenous people into the federal public service, the Public Service Commission (the Commission) is pleased to announce the launch of the new Indigenous Student Employment Opportunity (ISEO).

This national recruitment approach is modeled after the Indigenous Youth Summer Employment Opportunity pilot. The new inventory will allow for the recruitment of Indigenous students in all regions of Canada, providing them with work experience close to where they live or go to school.

Key Changes

  1. A nationwide initiative

Responding to feedback from federal organizations who want to participate in the initiative outside of the National Capital Region, the Commission is launching the ISEO across Canada.
  2. A targeted inventory

Students can now choose to apply directly to ISEO through the Federal Student Work Experience Program. Hiring managers can request referrals directly through ISEO.
  3. Room and board

Based on lessons learned and since the initiative is now available on a national scale, students will now be able to work in the region of their choice. As such, the room and board will no longer be provided.
  4. Key learning and development opportunities remain

We’ve partnered with the Canada School of Public Service to ensure that students and managers are aware of training opportunities. Given the program’s national scope, and to allow students to learn at their own pace, most of the learning activities will be offered online. Students will also have the opportunity to work with mentors and to network with peers.

The Indigenous Centre of Expertise and the Commission’s regional offices will lead the initiative and provide advice, guidance and support to students and hiring managers. Participating departments will be responsible for assessing and hiring candidates through ISEO.

The ISEO campaign was launched on February 15, 2018. Hiring managers can make requests for referrals as of March 1, 2018. We encourage all hiring managers to let us know as soon as they have successfully hired a student so that we can provide required onboarding tools and resources.

For more information on ISEO, please contact by email the Indigenous Centre of Expertise or visit the Indigenous Centre of Expertise's web site.

Thank you in advance for your participation in this innovative and worthwhile recruitment initiative.
