The Situational Judgement Test (318)

Important: Replacement of SJT-318

The new Public Service Entrance Exam (PSEE) – Test of Judgement (TOJ–375) will replace the Situational Judgement Test (SJT-318) as of September 1st, 2015.

The TOJ-375 assesses an individual's judgement, required for solving problems in work-related situations for officer-level positions. In comparison to the SJT-318, the TOJ-375 uses a broader scope of competencies and situations to assess judgement.

SJT-318 results

After September 1st, 2015, the TOJ-375 will be the only valid Public Service Commission tool available to assess judgement for officer-level positions. SJT-318 results are not transferable to new processes using the TOJ-375 and will not be converted into TOJ-375 results. Consequently, after September 1st, 2015, all candidates will be required to write the TOJ-375 for new selection processes that assess judgement using a Personnel Psychology Centre standardized test. An appointment process already under way using the SJT-318 will have continued access to it until the staffing process is completed.

More information and details on the TOJ-375 and other tests under the PSEE suite of recruitment and selection tests are available at Understanding the Public Service Entrance Exam suite of products.

Use

The Situational Judgement Test (SJT-318) assesses judgement required for solving problems in work-related situations. The SJT-318 presents you with hypothetical and challenging situations that one might encounter at work, and that involve working with others as part of a team, interacting with others, and dealing with workplace dilemmas. In response to each situation, you are presented with five possible actions that one might take in dealing with the problem described. Your task on the test will be to select the one response alternative that is the most effective and the one response alternative that is the least effective in dealing with the problem described. This test can also be administered through the PSC's Online Test Facility (OLTF) platform.

Description

The Situational Judgement Test (SJT-318) consists of fifty short descriptions of problem situations. Each of them is followed by two questions (asking you to select the most effective response and the least effective response alternatives). There are thus a total of 100 questions to be answered. Each question is worth one mark. Your score will be the total number of correct answers.

No specialized training, knowledge, or experience is required in order to write this test. Rather, your answers should draw on the general knowledge and life experience you have acquired (e.g., in work, school, extracurricular, and/or community activities).

You will be given 90 minutes to complete this test. Including the time for administrative purposes, a test session takes about 2 hours.

The Personnel Psychology Centre's 48 hour scoring service sends results to the test centre which in turn informs the candidates of their scores.

You are invited to read the sample test situations and to select the most effective response and the least effective response for each of them.

There is a 180 day waiting period before you can rewrite the test. You may not retake it until the retest period has elapsed. If you rewrite the test before the retest period has elapsed, your result will not be valid and a new retest period will be imposed from the most recent test date.
