Secure Portal and Digital Service Modernization (As announced in 2018)

In accordance with the Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals, a detailed SEA was undertaken for the Secure Portal & Digital Services Modernization.

The detailed SEA concluded that some projects under the Secure Portal & Digital Services Modernization Strategy are expected to reduce the paper transactions produced by the CRA (examples: Expansion of Digital Notifications, Auto-Receipts, Expansion of Re-File, Expansion of Submit Documents), while others will introduce enhancements to existing services where tax information is already delivered electronically to clients. The potential paper saving impacts should be regarded as an indirect effect of the CRA's incremental movement toward digital services. It is expected that as the CRA evolves its service portfolio to meet the expectations of clients, the CRA's focus will shift primarily from a paper-based business-driven process to a digital user-centric process.

Broadly speaking, while this proposal was not directly intended to reduce paper usage, reductions in paper-based transactions have been incrementally realized over the many years since electronic options for clients have been in place. For fiscal year 2018-2019, over 20 million pieces of correspondence were issued electronically by the CRA and over 1.2 million submissions were received through the Submit Documents service, thereby contributing to CRA's sustainable development goals.
