Combatting the underground economy requires partnership

Reducing participation in the underground economy is a matter of fairness that requires broad collaboration and commitment – no one organization or government can do it alone. That’s why the Canada Revenue Agency has joined forces with partners from across Canada in both the public and private sectors. Forums such as the Minister's Underground Economy Advisory Committee serve as an important resource for CRA efforts to fight the underground economy and engage key stakeholders.

Through partner engagement and input, several tools have been created that can be used by anyone concerned about the underground economy to raise awareness of its impact and to reduce participation. These tools provide information on the underground economy and the risks it poses to the consumers who support it.

The Agency encourages you to share these tools through your networks and give us your feedback on the products by sending us an email at UE Partners.

Don’t give cheaters a chance–Hire contractors who’ll give you a written contract!

If a contractor won’t give you a written contract or offers you a “tax-free” cash deal, it could be a sign they’re operating in the underground economy and cheating on their taxes. If they don’t follow the tax code, what makes you think they’ll follow the building code?

Next time you get renovations or repairs done, make sure your contractor gives you a signed contract and a receipt or invoice. It’s the best way to protect yourself and your home.
