About Express NOA

Express NOA is a secure Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) service that allows individuals and authorized representatives to view the result of an assessment immediately after filing a return and to receive the notice of assessment the next day.

The instant assessment results provides the status of the return with a summary of the refund, amount owing, or a zero balance and deposit information, if applicable.

The notice of assessment provides an account summary with the result of the assessed return showing a refund, a zero balance, or a balance owing, tax assessment summary, explanation of changes and other information, and RRSP/PRPP deduction limit statement. It may also contain the Home Buyers’ Plan statement and Lifelong Learning Plan statement.

The Express NOA service is available year-round in participating EFILE and NETFILE-certified tax preparation software.

Who can use Express NOA?

To use the Express NOA service, you must:

Express NOA is not mandatory for NETFILE-certified tax preparation software. Some software may include the service and others may not. If you have questions about your NETFILE-certified software, go to NETFILE-certified software.

Preparing a tax return for a family member or a friend

If you prepare a tax return for a family member or a friend, you need to:

  • Become authorized to use Express NOA on their behalf. You can get this authorization by obtaining a RepID through the Represent a Client portal. The RepID identifies you with the CRA.
  • Give your RepID to your family member or friend so they can authorize you as their representative through their My Account or by filling out and submitting Form T1013, Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative, to have online access.
  • Have them register for online mail.
  • Once you are authorized, you can access their tax information and file a return for them using NETFILE certified software.

For more information on authorizing a representative, go to Authorize or cancel a representative.

Authorized Representatives

To use the Express NOA service, you must:

When your client completes Part C of Form T183 to have their notice of assessment or reassessment made available electronically to you, the CRA will not send you or your client a paper copy of the notice of assessment or reassessment.

Express NOA is not mandatory for EFILE-certified software. Some software may include the service and others may not. If you have questions about your EFILE-certified software, go to EFILE-certified software.

How to use the Express NOA service?

Select a certified software that offers Express NOA.

  • The software will prompt the user to view the instant assessment results after you file the return. You will have to confirm the social insurance number for the NOA you want to view. You might have to login to the Express NOA service to see the instant assessment results.
  • To display the NOA the day after you file a return, open the return, log into the Express NOA service and confirm the social insurance number.

Why does Express NOA not show the payment?

Tax returns that are filed electronically are assessed so quickly that any payments you send with your return are not likely to show up on your NOA. This means that the payment also would not show up in the Express NOA service. Check your online banking to confirm your payment to the CRA or by logging into My Account to see your account balance.
