Family Caregiver Benefit for Children – Overview
The Family Caregiver Benefit for Children (the Benefit) allows eligible caregivers to receive up to 35 weeks of financial assistance to provide care or support to a critically ill or injured child. Caregivers must be family members or someone who is considered to be like family to the child needing care or support.
What is considered care or support
Care is defined as participating in the care of a critically ill or injured child. Support is defined as providing psychological or emotional support to a critically ill or injured child.
Who is a family member
A family member includes immediate family as well as other relatives and individuals considered to be like family, whether or not related by marriage, common-law partnership, or any legal parent-child relationship.
What is the definition of a critically ill or injured child
Anyone under 18 whose baseline state of health has changed significantly and whose life is at risk as a result of illness or injury. They must also need the care or support of at least one caregiver.
If the child is already living with a chronic medical condition, caregivers are not eligible for the Benefit unless the child’s health changes significantly because of a new and acute life-threatening event.
How much could I receive
Depending on your wages, you could receive up to $543 a week in 2017 and up to $547 a week in 2018, for up to 35 weeks.
Can more than one caregiver share benefits
Yes. 35 weeks of benefits may be shared by eligible caregivers during a 52-week period, at the same time or one after another.
Can I combine benefits
The Family Caregiver Benefit for Children is part of the suite of Employment Insurance (EI) caregiving benefits. It can be taken consecutively with other benefits such as the Compassionate Care Benefit in the unfortunate event that the child’s health deteriorates. In this case, you must meet the eligibility criteria for each benefit.
