After you apply
Waiting for a response on your application
If you filled in an application, you'll get a letter from us in the mail. It will tell you one of these things:
- If we need more information from you
- A decision on your application
Your decision letter will include
- The amount you will receive each month
- The date of your first payment
- Any past payments that may be owed to you
Checking your application status
You can check your application status in two ways:
- Online: Sign in to your MSCA and select the "Manage my benefits" link in the Old Age Security section
- By phone: Call us
Updating and correcting your application
Make sure your application is accurate. To correct information or update your direct deposit, mailing address, or telephone number, use one of the following methods:
- Complete the eServiceCanada form
- Visit a Service Canada Office
- Call us
Penalties for false, misleading, or omitted information
You could be fined if there is false, misleading, or omitted information on your OAS application. Interest is also charged on penalties and overpayments that are subject to a penalty.
If you disagree with the decision
If you disagree with the decision on your application, you may ask to have the decision reviewed. To do so, you must send your request for reconsideration in writing within 90 days of receiving your decision letter.
