Strategic Environmental Assessment
The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces are committed to ensure that activities and operations are conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner. Defence environmental policy recognizes that the responsible stewardship of the assets with which we are entrusted is not only a moral but also an operational imperative.
In response to the recommendations of the Commissioner of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Department of National Defence has been working towards the integration of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) to conform with the requirements of the 2004 Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals. Departmental policies regarding project approvals and environmental assessment were amended to include and communicate the SEA Cabinet Directive requirements.
