The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) closed on March 31, 2025. Applications and supporting documents are no longer accepted.
Change to the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant
If you progressed on or after March 31, 2024, your deadline to submit an AIG application was March 31, 2025. You had to submit an application by this date, even if you had not received supporting documents from your apprenticeship authority. The deadline for submitting supporting documents was 12 months from your application deadline date but no later than March 31, 2026.
To be eligible for the grant, you had to successfully complete the first year (level/block) or second year (level/block) within an eligible apprenticeship program, by March 31, 2025.
To be eligible for the AIG, you had to:
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a protected person
- not be a high school student
- demonstrate registration and completion with acceptable provincial/territorial AIG supporting documents
- be registered with a provincial/territorial apprenticeship authority as an apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade.
Eligibility while attending school
You could have applied for the AIG if you met the eligibility requirements and were a:
- registered apprentice enrolled in adult learning classes
- registered apprentice taking professional development courses, or
- Quebec apprentice completing your vocational training
Deadline to submit an application
Progression date between January 1, 2021, and March 30, 2024
- Application deadline was 12 months from progression date
- Deadline for submitting supporting proof document(s) was 12 months from application deadline but no later than March 31, 2026
Example
If your progression date was February 12, 2023, you had until February 12, 2024, to apply and until February 12, 2025, to provide supporting proof document(s).
Progression date on or after March 31, 2024, but no later than March 31, 2025
- Application deadline was March 31, 2025. You should have applied even if you had not received supporting documents from your apprenticeship authority
- Deadline for submitting supporting proof document(s) was 12 months from application deadline but no later than March 31, 2026.
Example
If your progression date was January 12, 2025, you had until March 31, 2025, to apply. The last date to submit supporting proof documents was March 31, 2026.
Other support
The Government of Canada will continue to support apprentices financially as they are unemployed and progress through their technical training. Eligible apprentices can access Employment Insurance benefits while attending technical training, and up to $20,000 in interest-free Canada Apprentice Loans.
Apprentices can apply for a Canada Apprentice Loan as early as 3 months before the start of their technical training and can receive funding as early as day one of their training while they wait for their Employment Insurance claim to be processed for payment.
Project funding for organizations providing apprenticeship support to individuals is available under the Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy.
