Get set before you start
Once you’re hired as a CSJ participant, there are a few important things to know before you start your job. These key details will help you feel prepared, understand your responsibilities, and know how to share your feedback when the job ends.
Starting your summer job checklist
Are you ready to start your summer job? Check these lists to find out! Make sure you click each checkbox on this page once you’ve completed the step.
It looks like you’re missing some required steps. Please speak with your employer to make sure you have all the necessary information and documents to participate in CSJ. To learn more about your responsibilities as a CSJ participant, read the information below.
You’re almost ready! Before you get started, make sure you understand your rights and know where to turn if you need help. If anything is unclear, take a moment to review the information provided below.
Working only one job at a time
You cannot work for more than one CSJ-funded employer at the same time.
You can work for more than one CSJ-funded employer only if the jobs happen one after the other. For example, if your first CSJ-funded job ends on June 14, you can work for another CSJ-funded employer starting on June 15. If your employment dates overlap, please let your employers know immediately.
Young Workers
To participate in CSJ, you must review the workplace and safety information on the Young Workers website and fully understand its content. This site provides important information about health and safety, employee rights, employment laws and more.
CSJ documents
Employer and Employee Declaration / Employee Consent Form
At the start of your job, your employer will ask you to fill out and sign either the Employer and Employee Declaration form or the Employee Consent form.
This form is used to:
- confirm your eligibility
- give permission to share information with us
- gather essential details about you
To confirm your eligibility, you will be asked to provide your:
- Social Insurance Number
- date of birth
- residency status
You will also be asked questions about your identity, such as your gender and ethnicity, in the employment equity section. If you do not feel comfortable answering these questions, you can select "prefer not to answer". If you want to know what information is required, you can preview the Employee Consent Form.
If you have already started working and did not sign one of these forms, please contact your employer as soon as possible.
Participant information sheet
Your employer should provide you with a document with essential information to participate in CSJ. It includes:
- a link to the Young Workers website
- a link to the Youth Participant Questionnaire
- CSJ contact information
Note: Please let your employer know if you did not receive this document, as the link to the Youth Participant Questionnaire is not provided on this webpage.
Youth participant questionnaire
Please fill out the anonymous Youth Participant Questionnaire at the end of your summer job. The link to participate will be shared by your employer. We will also send it to you by email, and we will remind you to fill it out in early August.
Your feedback helps us understand your CSJ experience and improve the program for future participants like you!

Know your rights
You have the right to a safe, inclusive, and healthy work environment that is free from harassment and discrimination.
If something at work doesn't meet these standards and you feel safe and comfortable, start by discussing your concern with your employer to see if it can be resolved. If you do not feel safe raising the issue with your employer, or if the concern is not resolved, please contact us.
To learn more about your rights as an employee, visit Young Workers.
Getting paid
Your employer should pay you through secure, traceable methods and give you clear proof of payment, such as a paystub. Wages must also be paid in a timely manner, typically every week or every 2 weeks, to ensure a reliable schedule. This allows you to easily track your earnings and feel confident about your compensation. If you ever notice that payments or paystubs are missing, speak with your employer first. If the issue is not resolved after that, please contact us.
