Get certified true copies of a passport or travel document

Some organizations may ask you for a certified true copy of your Canadian passport or travel document.

A certified true copy is a reproduction of part of your travel document that’s been

  • validated by an officer against the electronic passport record
  • certified as a true and authentic copy of the original
  • dated
  • sealed by the Passport Program

A certified true copy can’t include a copy of a visa or stamp in your passport or travel document.

Signed vs unsigned true copies

Some organizations need certified true copies of your signed passport or travel document. If you aren’t sure if this is the case, contact the organization and ask them.

If you ask for certified true copies when you apply for a new passport or travel document, you’ll get unsigned true copies.

If you need signed true copies

  • wait to get your new passport or travel document
  • sign it
  • apply for a certified true copy with your signed passport or travel document
