Who can renew a passport
You can only renew your Canadian passport if your last passport
All of the above must be true for you to renew your passport. You need to apply for a new passport if it’s not.
Your application will be rejected and returned if you apply for a renewal and don’t meet all the criteria.
Who can’t renew a passport
Do not apply for a renewal if you
- have a passport that was issued when you were under 16 years old
- You cannot renew a child passport.
- If you’re 16 years old and your child passport has expired, you need an adult passport.
- want to change your name, date of birth, place of birth or gender identifier on the new passport
For these situations, you must apply for a new passport. You can’t renew your passport.
When to renew your passport
- It depends on when you plan to travel. This is because each country has its own entry requirements.
- Always check the entry and exit requirements(opens in a new tab) for all countries you plan to visit.
- Then check your passport to see when it expires. This will tell you if you need to renew your passport before your trip.

- Make sure you have your new passport before making travel plans.
- If you apply to renew your passport more than a year before it expires, we’ll ask you the reason for the early renewal.
- If you’re submitting your application by mail, you need to include a written explanation.
