Proof of financial support
The letter of invitation your host provides for your super visa application must include proof that they can financially support you for the duration of your stay with them in Canada.
Follow the steps below to find the host’s minimum necessary income and how to prove they meet the income requirements.

Step 1: Calculate family size to find your host’s minimum income requirements
To determine your host’s minimum necessary income, include the following people in the family size count:
- you and any other super visa applicants the host will be supporting (such as your spouse or common-law partner)
- the host child or grandchild
- the host’s spouse (which might include a separated spouse) or common-law partner
- dependent children of the host and of their spouse or common-law partner
- Children who meet the definition of a dependent child must be included in the count, regardless of custody and child support arrangements.
- previously approved super visa applicants
- These are super visa holders who were in another letter of invitation (that is still applicable) signed by the host or the host’s spouse or common-law partner.
- previously sponsored individuals
- These are individuals the host or co-signer has previously sponsored (or acted as a co-signer for) and for whom the duration of the undertaking is still in effect.
Examples for calculating family size
Family size is 2
- The host child in Canada is inviting a parent.
- The host is not married and has no children.
1 host child + 1 invited parent = 2
Family size is 6
Example 1:
- The host child in Canada is inviting two parents.
- The host has
- a spouse
- 2 dependent children
1 host child + 2 invited parents + 2 dependent children + 1 spouse = 6
Example 2:
- The host grandchild in Canada is inviting a grandparent.
- The host has
- a spouse
- a dependent child
- The host’s spouse is already hosting their 2 parents on super visas.
- The 2 parents must be counted even if they’re not currently in Canada.
1 host grandchild + 1 invited grandparent + 1 spouse + 1 dependent child + 2 actively hosted parents = 6
Family size is 7
- The host child in Canada is inviting 2 parents.
- The host has
- a spouse
- 1 dependent child
- The host previously co-signed the sponsorship of their spouse’s 2 parents. That sponsorship is still in effect.
1 host child + 2 invited parents + 1 spouse + 1 dependent child + 2 actively sponsored parents = 7
Family size is 5
- The host child in Canada is inviting 2 parents.
- The host is divorced, has 2 children and shares custody with their former spouse.
1 host child + 2 invited parents + 2 dependent children = 5

Step 2: Provide proof of your host’s income
You must provide proof that your host meets the minimum necessary income requirements with your application. Your host can prove this in 1 of 2 ways.
Option 1
Your host can show that their total income (including the co-signer’s income, if applicable) meets or exceeds the minimum required amount in either of the 2 tax years before the application is submitted.
Documents to prove the income requirement
Your host, or their co-signer, must include their notice of assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Option 2
Your host can show that their total income (including the co-signer’s income, if applicable) in the year before the application is submitted was at least 75% of the minimum required amount.
You can add your own income to cover the remaining amount, if needed. The combined amount must meet or exceed the minimum necessary income requirements.
Documents to prove the income requirement
Documents from the host or co-signer
- Your host’s or the co-signer’s notice of assessment from the CRA [preferred]
If you don’t have the notice of assessment
If the notice of assessment is unavailable, you can submit any of the following income documents for your host or the co-signer:
- their T4 or T1 for the last tax year
- pay stubs for the most recent 12-month period available
- an original letter from an employer stating job title, job description and salary
- bank statements from the last calendar year to show
- investment income amounts
- regular deposits for employment or pension
- proof of other sources of income, such as
- pension statements
- proof of ownership and leasing contracts (showing rent amount and frequency) for rental properties
Documents that you can submit to prove your income
If you’re contributing to your host or co-signer’s income to meet the income requirement, you can submit any of the following documents:
- pay stubs for the most recent 12-month period available
- an original letter from an employer stating job title, job description and salary
- bank statements from the last calendar year to show
- investment income amounts
- regular deposits for employment or pension
- proof of other sources of income, such as
- pension statements
- proof of ownership and leasing contracts (showing rent amount and frequency) for rental properties
You must provide proof that you’ll continue to earn an income while in Canada. The document you use to prove this must include the currency you’re paid in.
