Prepare for your arrival
If you’re applying from outside Canada
If your application is approved, you’ll get a port of entry letter of introduction that says you’re allowed to work in Canada. This is not your work permit.
Present this letter, and any other necessary documents, at the port of entry when you arrive in Canada. You’ll only get your work permit at the port of entry the day you arrive in Canada.
If you’re applying from within Canada
If your application is approved, we’ll send you a notification in your online account letting you know your work permit has been approved. You can start working as soon as you receive this notification. You don’t have to wait until you get your work permit in the mail to start working.
Bringing your family with you
If your spouse or common-law partner or your dependent children want to work in Canada, they may be able to apply for an open work permit. Find out if they’re eligible for a work permit.
Your dependent children can also go to school or university while you’re working in Canada. Find out if they need a study permit.
