Program description
Epidemiology in Action is a limited enrolment course held annually in Ottawa. Participants learn to apply epidemiology principles and practices to public health investigations and surveillance.
The course is given in English by PHAC staff, field epidemiologists and other Canadian and international public health professionals with expertise in applied epidemiology training. The program includes lectures, case studies, group problem-solving workshops and exercises in scientific writing.
At the end of the course, participants will:
- be familiar with the steps in an outbreak investigation
- know the scope and structure of public health in Canada, including vulnerable populations in Canada
- be aware of the ethical and legal implications of public health activity in Canada
- create and implement an applied public health study
- define public health issues and identify data sources or methods to address them
- identify and use appropriate analytical tools and methods for epidemiological activity
- interpret results, formulate recommendations and summarise public health issues for diverse audiences
- use technical tools and software to manage and analyse epidemiologic data
Eligibility
Participants are selected based on their suitability, interests and relevant experience. To qualify, applicants must have a good understanding of epidemiology, use epidemiology methods in their work or study and have completed at least one of the following:
- an introductory course in epidemiology (normally at the graduate level), or
- CDC Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health Practice , or
- Skills Enhancement Module EPI1 Basic Epidemiological Concepts.
Space in the course is limited; preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

For an application package, please contact the course administrators. Completed applications must be submitted by August 13, 2012. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of August 2012.
There is no course fee, however, external participants are responsible for all transportation and accommodation costs. Participants can quote the course name to get reduced rates at the Minto Suites Hotel.
Note: All course participants must bring a PC laptop for classroom work.
