Eligibility and general information

Can I use this app for my business?

If you have a business with simple tax obligations, you can this app.

If any of the following situations apply, you cannot use this app:

  • you are not operating a business;
  • your business entity or a component of your business is a non-resident of Canada;
  • you are a GST/HST registrant with a fiscal year or reporting periods that end on a day other than the last day of a calendar month;
  • you are a listed financial institution;
  • your payroll account is a threshold 1 accelerated remitter or a threshold 2 accelerated remitter;
  • your corporation is in receivership or has declared bankruptcy in the last three years; or
  • you operate a sole-proprietorship or partnership and are in receivership or have declared bankruptcy in the last three years.
Do I need to be registered with My Business Account (MyBA) to use this app?

No. This app is a stand-alone service that will not interact in any way with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or other government systems.

My Business Account is a secure online portal that lets you interact electronically with the CRA on various business accounts. These accounts include goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (except for GST/HST accounts administered by Revenu Québec), payroll, corporation income taxes, excise taxes, excise duties, and more.

Where can I read the Privacy Notice and Terms of Service?

You will see the Privacy Notice and Terms of Service when you first use the app. You can also find them on the settings page.

Does the CRA keep track of the mobile device or the individual using the Business Tax Reminders app?

No. The Business Tax Reminders app does not interact with the CRA. The CRA will be able to determine the number of downloads from the download count that is available through the Google Play (Android), BlackBerry, and iTunes (Apple) websites.

Will my personal information be shared with the CRA?

No. The Business Tax Reminders app does not interact with the CRA and no personal data is shared with the CRA through the use of this service. All information gathered to use this service is secured through your personal security settings on your mobile device.

How do I delete this app from my mobile device?

This differs according to the mobile device you are using. If you are having trouble deleting this app from your mobile device, please contact your service provider for help.

Note

If you set up calendar reminders on an Apple device, you will have to go to the settings page and delete all the reminders BEFORE you delete the app.

Why didn’t the calendar reminders clear on my Apple device when I deleted the app?

This is a known problem for Apple iOS. Before deleting the app, remove the reminders by going to the settings page of the app. If the app has already been deleted and the alerts have not cleared, you have to manually remove unwanted reminders from the calendar.

Using the app

What can I do with this app?

This app sends you pop-up and/or calendar reminders for your CRA business tax due dates for the following:

  • instalment due dates for individual income tax, corporate income tax, and goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) accounts;
  • return due dates for:
    • GST/HST return
    • T2 corporation income tax return
    • T4 information return
    • T5013 partnership information return
    • T1 income tax and benefit return; and
  • remittance due dates for payroll and GST/HST accounts.

Note

Pop-up reminders are not available on the BlackBerry mobile app.

Are there any limitations on how many reminders I can set?

Yes, the mobile device you are using sets this limitation.

Apple products limit the number of pop-up alerts you can set at one time to 64. Once you have received your 64 pop-up reminders, you must re-establish your reminders.

Calendar reminders are set to a maximum of five years. When you first set up the reminders, you can decide the length of time. The last three reminders will prompt you to re-establish your reminders.

What if I entered the wrong information in the setup?

If you notice the error before finalizing the information on the summary screen, select the setting you need to correct and update your information.

If you notice the error after finalizing the information on the summary screen, your reminders have already been set. You will have to return to the home page and select the account you need to update.

Note

If you have set up the calendar reminders on an Apple device, you will have to go to the settings page and delete the reminders BEFORE updating your account information. Otherwise, you may receive duplicate reminders.

What if my tax obligations change after the initial setup?

If your tax obligations change after the initial setup, relaunch the app and select the account(s) you need to update.

If you have set up the calendar reminders on an Apple device, you will have to go to the settings page and delete the reminders BEFORE updating your account information. Otherwise, you may receive duplicate reminders.

How do I remove a specific program account?

On the account page, swipe left on the account you want to remove.

Why didn’t the calendar reminders clear on my Apple device when I removed one of my accounts?

This is a known problem for Apple iOS. Before removing an account, remove the reminders by going to the settings page of the app. If the account has already been removed and the alerts have not cleared, you have to manually remove unwanted reminders from the calendar.

What happens if I miss a due date because I didn’t get a reminder, I input the wrong information, or the reminder didn’t come at the right time?

This service is meant to help you meet your tax obligations. However, the CRA and the Government of Canada are not responsible for the accuracy, reliability, or currency of the reminders since they are generated based on the information you input.

If you input incorrect information or your device or the app malfunctions, the CRA is not responsible for any interest or penalties you may be charged because you missed the due dates to file your returns or make payments.

You are responsible for making sure you meet your tax obligations according to the Income Tax Act and the Excise Tax Act.
