Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program documents and information
Reference documents, such as forms and guides, and information about the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program (ITAVP) are available in the Personalized Space for Organizations and Volunteers on Revenu Québec’s website. They are intended to help things run smoothly.
To access the personalized space for volunteers, enter the user code you received from your ITAVP coordinator or affiliated organization.
Important note
The personalized space for volunteers is updated as documents are finalized and information is made available. We recommend that you check it regularly. Program documents and information are confidential and reserved for participating organizations and volunteers only. Do not share them with any non-participants.
To facilitate your navigation, we suggest that you keep the personalized space for volunteers open in another tab, as it is complementary to the online training.
Administrative responsibilities of the volunteer
Before starting the training, review the administrative responsibilities outlined in the Guide for Volunteers available in the personalized space for volunteers.
Registering as volunteers
All volunteers who prepare tax returns, or who handle or have access to an individual's personal and tax-related information, must register for the program every year.
To register as a volunteer for the income tax assistance program:
- go to revenuquebec.ca/volunteers
- click Become a Volunteer. This page contains everything you need to know about the registration procedure
- complete the registration form, once you submit it a program coordinator may contact you if necessary
- returning volunteers will be asked to enter their Volunteer Identification Number (VIN) when registering for the program but if you are unable to provide it, simply select no to the question asking if you have a VIN.
Important note
The VIN is a new feature that was implemented in 2024. If you are approved to participate with the ITAVP, you will receive an email with your approval and your VIN. For more information or assistance, please contact your CRA coordinator.
Volunteers who perform support tasks must also register for the program every year.
ITAVP tip
You must be affiliated with a participating community organization to become a volunteer under the program. If needed, an ITAVP coordinator can help you find a participating organization.
Authorizations to file tax returns electronically
You must obtain the following electronic filing authorizations in order to file tax returns electronically:
- EFILE (CRA): Go to EFILE for electronic filers and click Apply for EFILE to register or EFILE Sign in to renew your account.
- NetFile Québec (Revenu Québec): The organization you are affiliated with will have to register you for NetFile Québec.
Important note
All EFILE registrations or renewals require a RepID. You can get a RepID by registering with Represent a Client. If you already have one, you will have to provide it when renewing your registration.
Requirements to be met depending on the role and tasks performed
You may need to provide a valid police background check to your organization based on your role and the tasks you will perform as a volunteer. For more information on the different requirements, refer to Administrative Responsibilities in the Guide for Volunteers available in the personalized space for volunteers.
Program registration approval (volunteers)
Once you have met the requirements for your role, you will receive an email indicating that your registration has been approved.
ITAVP tip
If you did not receive an approval email, contact your coordinator to find out if you can participate as an ITAVP volunteer.
The sooner you complete the steps, the sooner you will be ready to help individuals with completing their tax returns.
Remember that each step takes time. Consequently, we encourage you to start the process as soon as possible to be ready for the tax season as soon as it starts!
Accessing the software
We encourage you to use the tax preparation software provided by the income tax assistance program (UFile CVITP), to complete and submit tax returns electronically as part of the program.
Once your application to become a program volunteer has been approved, your organization will email you an activation key and instructions for downloading the software to your computer.
A new version of the tax software is released each year, usually around mid-February.
