After you file
Get your notice of assessment (NOA), check the status of your refund, make a change to your tax return after it has been assessed and additional information.
Getting your notice
When the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) receives your return, it is usually reviewed based on the information you provided and an NOA is sent to you. However, the CRA may select your return for a more detailed review before the CRA assesses it. If so, your assessment may be delayed while the CRA asks you to send documents to support the deductions and credits you claimed.
The CRA may also carry out a more detailed review after your return has been assessed to verify the income reported and the deductions or credits claimed.
Checking the status of your tax refund
The CRA aims to send you an NOA for your section 216 return, as well as any refund, within 16 weeks.
You may check the status of your return online using your CRA My Account.
- Sign in to your CRA account
- Select your Individual account
For other options: Check the status of your return
Receiving email notifications
If you entered your email address on your return, you will receive an email notification when your NOA is ready to view in your CRA account. You will not receive a paper copy in the mail.
If you can't access your CRA account, ask your representative to get a copy of your NOA through Represent a client or call the CRA to have your NOA mailed to you. For details, go to Notice of assessment - NOA or NOR.
Changing your return
Do not send the CRA another section 216 return for the year that you want to change. Instead, send the following documents to your tax centre:
- Completed Form T1-ADJ, T1 Adjustment Request, or a signed letter providing the details of your request, including the following:
- The year of the return to be changed
- Your social insurance number (SIN), individual tax number (ITN), or temporary tax number (TTN)
- Your address
- Your telephone number where the CRA can reach you during the day
- Supporting documents for the changes you are requesting and, if you have not sent them to the CRA before, supporting documents for your original claim
It usually takes 8 weeks for the CRA to complete the adjustment and mail you an notice of reassessment.
Updating your personal information
Inform the CRA of changes to your personal information as soon as possible. For details, go to Update your personal information with the CRA.
